Embassy of Japan in Pakistan

Study and Research Plan Applicant: Ahmed Shah Intended programme: Master's in Agricultural Water Management / Agricultural Engineering Preferred university and supervisor: [University name], Professor [Name]
1. Background and motivation
I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, in [year], with a CGPA of [3.5/4.0]. I grew up in a farming family near Okara, where we cultivate wheat and maize on about [12] acres. Every year I have watched my father flood-irrigate our fields because canal water arrives on a fixed schedule, and then pump groundwater when it does not. Over the past ten years the water table in our village has dropped significantly, and the cost of pumping has risen sharply.
During my final-year project, I compared water use under flood irrigation and furrow irrigation on [demonstration plots] at the university's research farm. We found that furrow irrigation used considerably less water with no meaningful drop in yield. This experience made me want to study water-saving irrigation technologies and the systems needed to bring them to small farmers.
2. Why [China / Japan] and this university
[For China: China has achieved large-scale adoption of water-saving irrigation, including drip and sprinkler systems in arid regions such as Xinjiang and Gansu, and it has built research and extension systems that reach millions of small farmers. [University name] is a leading institution in agricultural water research, and Professor [Name]'s work on deficit irrigation for wheat and maize is directly relevant to the crops grown in Punjab. Cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) also includes agriculture, which means that the knowledge I gain will be directly useful at home.]
[For Japan: Japan has a long history of efficient, community-managed irrigation through land improvement districts, and Japanese research on precision irrigation and sensor-based water management is among the most advanced in the world. Professor [Name]'s laboratory at [University name] works on soil-moisture sensing and irrigation scheduling, and I believe their approach could be adapted at low cost for small farms in Pakistan.]
3. Research topic and objectives
Proposed topic: Sensor-based deficit irrigation scheduling for wheat and maize under small-farm conditions in semi-arid regions
Objectives:
- To evaluate how deficit irrigation strategies affect yield and water productivity of wheat and maize
- To test low-cost soil moisture sensors for scheduling irrigation on small plots
- To develop simple scheduling guidelines that could be adapted for Pakistani farmers
4. Methods
I will conduct field or greenhouse experiments with different irrigation levels (for example, full irrigation and two levels of deficit), measuring soil moisture, crop growth, yield and water use. I will use crop models such as [AquaCrop] to extend the results to different climates, including Punjab's conditions, using climate data from the Pakistan Meteorological Department.
5. Study timeline
Period Plan First 6 to 12 months [Chinese / Japanese] language study and preparatory courses (as required by the programme or as a research student), literature review, refine research proposal with supervisor Year 1 Core coursework: irrigation engineering, soil physics, crop modelling, statistics; design of experiments Year 2 (first half) Field or greenhouse experiments; data collection Year 2 (second half) Data analysis, crop modelling, thesis writing, journal paper submission 6. Plans after returning to Pakistan
After completing my degree, I plan to return to Pakistan and join the On-Farm Water Management wing of the Punjab Agriculture Department or a research institute such as the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council. I also hope to work with farmer organisations to run demonstration plots for deficit irrigation. In the long term, I would like to pursue a PhD and contribute to national policy on groundwater use. I will also continue to build academic links between [university] and Pakistani institutions, so that more students and researchers can benefit from cooperation between our countries.
