Australia is one of the most popular destinations for Pakistani students. Degrees are taught in English, universities rank well, campuses are safe, and graduates can stay on for two to three years of work after study. It is also one of the more expensive options, and the visa process has become stricter since 2024. This guide sets out what it really costs and where the funding is.

All conversions in this guide use AUD 1 ≈ PKR 193 (October 2026). Exchange rates move, so treat PKR figures as approximate.

Quick facts Australia
Language of teaching English
Academic year and intakes February/March (main) and July; some universities also offer November or trimester starts
Typical tuition (per year) Bachelor's AUD 25,000 to 50,000; master's AUD 22,000 to 54,000; PhD AUD 30,000 to 50,000 (approx., PKR 4.2m to 10.4m). All universities are public except a few private ones such as Bond
Monthly living cost AUD 1,700 to 3,200 (approx. PKR 328,000 to 618,000), depending on city
Part-time work 48 hours per fortnight during study periods, unlimited during official breaks
Post-study work Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485): 2 years after a bachelor's or coursework master's, 3 years after a research master's or PhD

Budget options: what you can do on every budget

Budget Route What it looks like
Fully funded Australia Awards Scholarship (master's); Research Training Program (RTP) or university research scholarships (PhD and research master's) Tuition, health cover and a living allowance or stipend paid. Australia Awards also pays return airfare. Very competitive. RTP stipends at most universities are around AUD 37,000 to 43,000 a year (approx. PKR 7.1m to 8.3m, 2026 rates)
Partial scholarship + lower-cost university University merit scholarships (usually 10% to 50% off tuition); regional campuses; Destination Australia where a university still offers it Choose a university in a smaller city (for example Adelaide, Hobart, Darwin, Toowoomba or Wollongong) where tuition and rent are lower. First-year cash needed after a 25% to 30% scholarship is roughly AUD 45,000 to 55,000 (approx. PKR 8.7m to 10.6m)
Self-funded, mid-range Mid-ranked university in Brisbane, Adelaide or Perth Tuition AUD 30,000 to 40,000 plus living AUD 25,000 to 30,000. First-year total approx. AUD 57,000 to 72,000 (PKR 11m to 13.9m)
Self-funded, premium Group of Eight university in Sydney or Melbourne (for example University of Melbourne, UNSW, University of Sydney, Monash) Tuition AUD 45,000 to 60,000 plus living AUD 30,000 to 38,000. First-year total approx. AUD 78,000 to 100,000 (PKR 15m to 19.3m)

If your family budget is limited, the realistic Australian routes are a fully funded PhD or Australia Awards. For self-funded master's study, compare Australia carefully with lower-cost countries such as Malaysia, Germany or Italy before committing.

University costs

Australia has about 40 universities, almost all of them public, but every public university charges international students full fees. There is no tuition-free option.

  • Bachelor's: roughly AUD 25,000 to 50,000 a year. Medicine, dentistry and veterinary science can go well above AUD 70,000.
  • Coursework master's: roughly AUD 22,000 to 54,000 a year, usually 1.5 to 2 years.
  • PhD: roughly AUD 30,000 to 50,000 a year, but most international PhD students who are accepted receive a tuition scholarship, so few pay this themselves.
  • Application fees: many universities charge nothing; others charge around AUD 100 to 150 (approx. PKR 19,000 to 29,000).
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC): compulsory, roughly AUD 600 to 800 a year for a single student (approx.).
  • Deposit: most universities ask for one semester or one year of tuition before they issue your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

Fees rise every year, usually by 3% to 6%. Check the exact figure for your course and intake on the university's own fee page.

Living costs

To get a visa you must show at least AUD 29,710 a year for living costs (approx. PKR 5.73m). That works out to about AUD 2,475 a month, and in Sydney or Melbourne real costs are often higher. The figures below are approximate monthly costs for a single student in shared housing.

City Rent (shared room) Food Transport Total per month
Sydney AUD 1,300 to 1,900 AUD 450 to 650 AUD 150 to 200 AUD 2,300 to 3,200 (PKR 444,000 to 618,000)
Melbourne AUD 1,100 to 1,600 AUD 450 to 600 AUD 130 to 180 AUD 2,000 to 2,800 (PKR 386,000 to 540,000)
Brisbane AUD 1,000 to 1,500 AUD 400 to 600 AUD 100 to 150 AUD 1,900 to 2,600 (PKR 367,000 to 502,000)
Adelaide AUD 850 to 1,250 AUD 400 to 550 AUD 80 to 130 AUD 1,700 to 2,300 (PKR 328,000 to 444,000)

Add phone, internet and utilities (AUD 100 to 200 a month) if they are not included in your rent. Halal food is easy to find in all four cities.

Scholarships and need-based funding

Australia Awards Scholarships (Pakistan). Funded by the Australian Government. For the 2027 intake the Pakistan programme was for master's study only. Key eligibility points from the official country profile:

  • Pakistani citizen living in Pakistan, aged 45 or under when applying
  • 16 years of education and five years of relevant work experience in Pakistan
  • IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 84 (21 in each section) or PTE 58 (no skill below 50). Applicants with disability may apply with IELTS 6.0
  • Priority fields: climate change, empowerment of women and girls, agriculture and water security, infrastructure, and inclusive economic development
  • You must return to Pakistan for at least two years after the degree
  • Covers full tuition, return airfare, an establishment allowance, a living allowance, OSHC and academic support

Applications for the 2027 intake closed on 30 April 2026. The next round (2028 intake) is expected to open around February 2027 and close around April 2027. Apply only through the official OASIS portal at australiaawardspakistan.org. Australia Awards never charges a fee.

Research Training Program (RTP). This is Australian Government money that each university uses to fund research students, including international PhD and research master's students. An RTP international package usually covers tuition and OSHC, and a stipend is often attached. For example, the University of Sydney lists a 2026 stipend of AUD 42,754 a year. Most universities have one or two rounds a year, typically closing between August and October for a start the following year, with a second round around December to March. The key step is finding a supervisor who supports your application before the deadline.

University merit scholarships. Almost every university offers automatic or competitive scholarships for international students, usually 10% to 50% off tuition. Search the university's scholarships page for "international". Some regional universities have also offered Destination Australia scholarships of up to AUD 15,000 a year, but availability varies, so confirm with the university.

Pakistani funding. Check whether HEC has a current overseas PhD scholarship call that includes Australia. Calls and eligible countries change from phase to phase.

Student visa: steps, documents and fees

You apply for the Student visa (subclass 500) online through ImmiAccount on the Department of Home Affairs website.

  1. Get an offer and accept it. Pay the deposit and arrange OSHC. The university then issues your CoE.
  2. Prepare documents:
    • Passport, CoE, OSHC policy
    • English test result. The visa minimum is generally IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent), and universities usually ask for 6.5 or more
    • Evidence of funds: first-year tuition (minus any amount already paid), AUD 29,710 living costs and travel costs. Bank statements, fixed deposits, education loans or a scholarship letter are all accepted. Officers look at the history of the account, not only the closing balance
    • Answers to the Genuine Student (GS) questions and supporting evidence
    • Academic documents, attested by HEC (degrees) or IBCC (Matric/FSc). See /library/guides/hec-degree-attestation-guide
  3. Pay the visa fee: AUD 2,500 (approx. PKR 482,500) for the main applicant, effective 1 July 2026. Fees usually change every 1 July.
  4. Biometrics and health check. After lodging you will be asked to give biometrics at a VFS Global Australia visa centre (Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi). Pakistani applicants also need a medical exam and chest X-ray with a Home Affairs panel physician.
  5. Wait for a decision. Many complete applications from Pakistan are decided within one to two months, but some take much longer. Under the 2026 National Planning Level (295,000 new students), applications to a university that has filled its allocation are processed more slowly, so apply early.

The Genuine Student requirement. Since 23 March 2024 you no longer write a single statement. Instead you answer four short questions in the form, each with a limit of around 150 words:

  • your current circumstances (family, community, work and financial ties to Pakistan)
  • why you chose this course, this provider and Australia rather than Pakistan
  • how the course will benefit you
  • anything else relevant, such as gaps in study or relatives in Australia

Support every claim with documents: job letters, property papers, family registration, an explanation of gaps. Generic answers carry little weight. See /library/guides/document-checklist-pakistan and /library/guides/visa-and-pre-departure-checklist.

Working while studying and after graduating

  • During study: up to 48 hours per fortnight while your course is in session, and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks. Research master's and PhD students have no limit once their course has started. The minimum wage is above AUD 24 an hour (approx.), but do not plan your budget around part-time income. It should cover extras, not tuition.
  • After graduating: the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), Post-Higher Education Work stream, generally gives 2 years after a bachelor's or coursework master's and 3 years after a research master's or PhD. Most applicants must be 35 or under (research graduates have a higher age limit), meet an English score and apply within six months of finishing. The fee rose to AUD 5,750 (approx. PKR 1.11m) from 1 July 2026.
  • Permanent residence is possible through skilled migration, but it is points-based and competitive. Do not choose a course only because it once appeared on an occupation list.

Month-by-month timeline (February 2027 or July 2027 intake)

November to December 2026 Apply for February 2027 (late) or July 2027. Start HEC/IBCC attestation. PhD applicants: contact supervisors for the December round
January to February 2027 Accept offer, pay deposit, get CoE. Australia Awards round expected to open
February to April 2027 Lodge visa for July (aim 3 to 4 months ahead). Finish Australia Awards application before the April close

Common mistakes Pakistani applicants make

  • Weak Genuine Student answers. Copying a template or writing about migration plans instead of your study goals and ties to Pakistan.
  • Last-minute funds. Large deposits just before applying, with no explanation of where the money came from.
  • Choosing a provider for the lowest fee only. Some low-cost colleges have high refusal rates. Check the institution's reputation and CRICOS registration.
  • Applying too late. Once a university reaches its planning level allocation, processing slows down.
  • Unattested or untranslated documents, or mismatched names across passport, degree and bank papers.
  • Paying agents for scholarships. Australia Awards and RTP are free to apply for. See /library/guides/avoiding-scholarship-scams.
